University Museums and collections are vital to the SDGs by serving as trusted spaces for public education, fostering community well-being, promoting cultural understanding, and translating academic research into tangible actions. They may use diverse approaches such as hands-on exhibits, educational programs, digital outreach, and partnerships, to tackle global challenges ranging from climate change to social equity. They integrate sustainability into programming, offer well-being benefits and become community hubs, bridging academia and society to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
Key Strategies of University Museums for public engagement may integrate SDG themes such as climate action, poverty, and equity into exhibits and learning programs for all ages, moving beyond traditional learning to action-oriented Education for Sustainable Development (Education-SDG 4). They have the potential to be transformed into trusted public spaces (hubs) for dialogue, empowering youth (Resolution 4 Empowering Museums in Achieving the SDGs through Youth, ICOM Dubai 2025), addressing local issues and building social capital through events and partnerships, being excellent for disseminating reliable information on complex issues. U-Museums’ and collections’ visits may have mental health benefits, connecting heritage to emotional well-being (Well-being & Social Prescribing-SDG 3). University Museums may act as mediators between universities and society, translating research on water, energy, environment, circular economy, urban life, etc. into practical community solutions while engaging members of society to meet the SDGs. The implementation of digital tools to enhance creative storytelling and build meaning around heritage will enable them to reach wider audiences (Resolution 3, Sustainable through technologies, ICOM Dubai 2025).
