WORKSHOP 2 TEACHING WITH OBJECTS

This hybrid workshop presents a slate of collections-based pedagogic approaches to activating art and artifacts for teaching and learning across the humanities and the sciences. The workshop posits close looking as foundational to engaging critically and creatively with objects’ visual and physical characteristics, as well as with their cultural meanings and significations. In the first hour, Milkova (virtually) and Sánchez-Jáuregui (in person) will highlight successful examples from their practice and share models that can be replicated in different contexts and with various curricular goals in mind. In the second hour, Sánchez-Jáuregui will lead a broadly applicable, interactive activity (on site) which invites participants to look deeply and reflect on the experience of looking together and thinking with objects.

Dr. Liliana Milkova is the Head of the Education Department and Nolen Curator of Education and Academic Affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery. She leads the Gallery’s educational vision and oversees university-level teaching with the collection, student engagement, public education, and public programming. Milkova specializes in teaching with art across academic disciplines and has published extensively on the topic. She holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and an AB from Brown University.
Dr. Lola Sanchez-Jáuregui is art curator at the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow. She combines her curatorial work with research and teaching bringing together art-historical scholarship, museum practice, object-based pedagogies and cross-disciplinary collaboration. A specialist in European and American art of the eighteenth century, she has worked and curated exhibitions at European and North American museums. She is director of the Hunterian-Magma Summer School and co-director of Collections Lab (UofG).
